You are invited to send two graduate students or researchers
to attend the seventh annual ARPA graduate students conference.
This year the conference will be held at the Asilomar conference
ground in Pacific Grove, California, beginning with dinner on
Sunday, June 30, and ending with lunch on Wednesday, July 3.
As in the past years, the main purpose of this conference
will be to acquaint younger members of the ARPA research community
with activities outside their own groups. The conference will be
very informal and will have very little structure; however, attendees
will be requested to give short (300 second) introductions of
themselves and their research. A blackboard will be available, and
other audio-visual equipment can be made available upon request,
but these talks should be kept as informal and short as possible.
In addition to any audio-visual equipment requested, I will try
to arrange for limited network access -- probably a TI terminal and
a closed-circuit TV system for demonstrations. In the past, this
equipment has made it possible for people to demonstrate their work to
each other as well as to talk about it, and was a valuable asset to the
conference. Most of the time, however, will be spent just interacting
personally and in small groups on various computer science issues, and
it is not intended that a great deal of time be spent on demonstrations.
Accomodations will be two people per room and all meals are
included. The cost of the conference will be $75.00, payable at the
conference. As in the past, both space and time will be fully utilized,
so it is not possible to accomodate spouses.
Attendees should arrange their own transportation to and from the
conference and should arrive by 6 p.m. on 30 June. The Monterey
airport is quite close to Asilomar and limousine service is available.
Alternatively, the drive from the L.A., Santa Barbara or San Francisco
area is quite pleasant. Asilomar is on the beach in the city of
Pacific Grove between Carmel and Monterey and is easy to find on maps
or by dead reckoning.
The weather in the area tends to be cool and sometimes foggy,
even during the summer, so a jacket is recommended. Otherwise, dress
is completely informal.
Because of the short time remaining until the conference, I do not
plan to send any additional information. Please respond by June 7 with
the names of your nominees and the following additional information:
1. ARPANET address
2. Bell system telephone number
3. U. S. Postal Service mail address
4. One sentence description of area of interest.
5. Audio-visual equipment requests if any.
This information should be sent to CROCKER@ISI or phoned to
me at (202) 694-5037 or (202) 694-5922.
Attending this conference is one of my most pleasant tasks
and I am looking forward to meeting everyone.
Thank you,
Steve Crocker
